Real estate and construction represent more than 20 percent of the city’s economy. Urban infrastructure has expanded at a rate unparalleled in modern human history. The Burj Khalifa stands at slightly more than 828 meters —almost a kilometer tall. The city’s Persian Gulf coast is the site of the Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island shaped like a palm tree. The Palm Jumeirah hosts 4,000 residential lots and has doubled Dubai’s shoreline. The city’s international airport will soon be the largest airport in the world.

The ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference Ten Plus One (PMC 10 +1) sessions on 1 July focused on “the overview and future direction of ASEAN cooperation with its Dialogue Partners”. The ASEAN members developed and adopted a Plan of Action for furthering implementation of the SEANWFZ. The Plan is intended to increase regional coordination in opposition to nuclear weapons and deepen regional participation in the relevant international agreements. Under the Plan of Action, States agree to pursue completion of IAEA safeguard agreements and accession to the Convention on Early Notification of Nuclear Accidents and regional emergency response plans. In addition, the states agreed to consider accession to other relevant instruments such as the CTBT and the counter-terrorism conventions related to nuclear weapons.

A historical movement of population from the arid zones of Central Asia has followed the mountain passes into the Indian subcontinent. More recent migrations have originated in China, with destinations throughout Southeast Asia. The Korean and Japanese peoples and, to a lesser extent, the Chinese have remained ethnically more homogeneous than the populations of other Asian countries. Asia’s coastline—some 39,000 miles in length—is, variously, high and mountainous, low and alluvial, terraced as a result of the land’s having been uplifted, or “drowned” where the land has subsided. The specific features of the coastline in some areas—especially in the east and southeast—are the result of active volcanism; thermal abrasion of permafrost , as in northeastern Siberia; and coral growth, as in the areas to the south and southeast. Accreting sandy beaches also occur in many areas, such as along the Bay of Bengal and the Gulf of Thailand.

Exploitation of the migrants can occur in the process of movement when they may be forced to pay exorbitant amounts of money or suffer physical abuse. There have been several documented cases of undocumented migrants from the region losing their lives due to suffocation or drowning in the process of migration. At destinations they can be subject to exploitation and discrimination especially if they are undocumented migrants. Such migrants usually are depicted as criminals rather than as victims of the groups that exploit them in the process of migration or at the destination. In 1994, remittances from overseas workers accounted for 34 percent of the revenues earned from all goods and services exported from Bangladesh. In the case of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, this percentage ranged from 14 to 17 percent.

As a conclusion, it could be said that Southeast Asian studies and what it constitutes is, first and foremost, a knowledge construct that represents only part of the region's social reality. In spite of this, it is the most important element, amongst the many, that gives Southeast Asia, the geo-physical region as well as its people and environment, its history, territory, and society. Because of the co-existence of different societal forms in the region, hence the unevenness of the tempo of social life in the region, the speed of social change thus also differs from one community to the other, from one area within the region to another.

Over the years, China has also increased its port and logistics construction in Sri Lanka. While once thought that the tourism industry would continue to scale up in Sri Lanka, terror bombings in April of 2019 have deterred guests from visiting the small island country. In this situation, the countries of Southeast Asia have the common concern that their region might be seriously affected by the Sino-Soviet confrontation and changes in the power relationships among the major countries. Laborite administrations were inaugurated in Australia and New Zealand toward the end of 1972, and the two countries adopted new diplomatic policies, including the recognition of the People's Republic of China in December 1972. As a result, there were indications that the character of the military arrangements mainly intended for Southeast Asia, such as SEATO and the five-nation defense arrangement of which both Australia and New Zealand are members, might change.

Prior to the proposal, Burma issued a Government statement on the Vietnam cease-fire showing that it was not necessarily negative toward regional cooperation in Southeast Asia, and this was carefully noted. The Vietnam cease-fire, in particular, is considered as harboring the great possibility of upsetting the balance among the great powers in Southeast Asia, thereby exerting an influence on the domestic affairs and diplomacy of the countries in that region. In the southeast of Asia there is the Malay Archipelago, a widely ramified island world that consists of many countries and reaches as far as Australia. Along the Pacific firing from Japan over the Philippines to Indonesia thousands of islands have a volcanic origin.

India

The 29th Annual ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, involving Foreign Ministers, issued a communiqué in Jakarta on 21 July. It called for the expeditious ratification of the SEANWFZ Treaty, and for an end to nuclear testing and the conclusion of a CTBT. The Ministers welcomed the progress in the implementation of the SEANWFZ Treaty, stressed the importance of direct consultation between ASEAN, and the NWS and considered this significant progress towards encouraging the accession of the NWS to the Protocol to the SEANWFZ Treaty.

Asia: Resources

Due to its connections with China, Macau is not always considered a fully fledged country. Macau squeezes a population of roughly 682,800 into a tiny total area of 33 km2 . Geographically speaking, Asia is the world's largest continent by a wide margin.

Today, Asian countries rank as some of the top producers of many agricultural, forest, fishing, mining, and industrial products. This increased production has brought both extreme wealth and negative environmental impacts to the continent. The geographic term “Asia” was originally used by ancient Greeks to describe the civilizations east of their empire. Ancient Asian peoples, however, saw themselves as a varied and diverse mix of cultures—not a collective group.

On 2 April, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel joined defense ministers from the 10 Asia-Pacific countries for an unofficial meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen and “rebalance” the relationship between the United States and ASEAN. On 8 October, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar delivered a statement on behalf of ASEAN during the opening statements for the General Assembly First Committee.
